Why Do We Need Vision Quests?

The modern world has become so lost in its technological achievements that it is now a fact that we humans are forgetting our own connection with the planet. The human impact on the global environment is the biggest sign that we, as a species have forgotten our primal roots. It is important to remember that human nature, which includes our psyches, has evolved over millions of years under the influence of the environment that our ancestors inhabited. We can’t function without the environment, we depend on it absolutely to breathe, to eat, and to drink.

Some psychologists are now becoming aware that our loss of connection to the natural environment is causing all sorts of mental illnesses. For example, major depression, which is fast accelerating out of control and by 2020 will become the second most disabling disease after heart disease, is now being seen not as a ‘chemical imbalance’ but as a socially constructed disease. More precisely, depression, and many other mental and emotional disorders are caused by the mind-boggling speed of the social changes that have been happening in the last 50 years. These fast changes cause a psychic shock that the mind doesn't know how to handle, so it becomes numb. Because the shock is so traumatic it’s masked. The masks become personality disorders and addictions that hold the numbness in place. All addictions from drugs and alcohol through to shopping and technology contribute to mask the pain.

The changes that have taken place in our social structure since World War II include the breakdown of extended families and dispersal of communities, and an increase in focus on the individual and material wealth. Traditionally communities have lived and operated with awareness in their environment. With the breakdown of community structures and their extended families the individual has become mentally and emotionally isolated from everything that is important to their existence. They have become emotionally isolated from their potential community, and worse, emotionally isolated from the natural environment that sustains them. From this we can understand why we contribute so easily and unconsciously to the destruction of the environment. We have forgotten our historical, mythological and spiritual connection to the land.

The remembering of our origins lies beneath the psychic numbness. This is not an intellectual remembering, it's a full experiential journey into the unconscious to find that which we have lost. Our soul.

And how do we do this?

The soul of the landscape mirrors the landscape of the soul, so by being out there in the wilderness exploring the truth of nature we are also exploring the nature of truth. Sometimes it’s subtle; sometimes it 'slaps you across the face to wake you'.

BLUE MOUNTAINS VISION QUEST specialises in reconnecting people with the Nature of their own truth by experiencing the truth of Nature. Reconnecting people not only with the earth but also with the most sacred and most profound aspects of life that are normally missed in our everyday hustle and bustle.

BMVQ facilitates nature-based soul-initiation. By spending time out in the wilderness we strip away our social constraints and embark on an inner quest, a journey into ourselves, where, at its deepest, we can find soul. In essence, each journey into the wilderness of our own psyche deepens our connection with soul. When we find soul we uncover our true self and its ultimate purpose. From there we can function with great strength and clarity in the world we create for ourselves.

Passion In Action:

For us this work is passion in action. It is the culmination of lifetimes of experience of going 'beyond the beyond', exploring the world beyond our perceptions and beliefs - beyond social expectations and cultural restriction - and going even further beyond. It is a journey of the soul's yearning to be known and recognised by the Divine.

This work is also an expression of our passion for humanity and the environment and exploding the illusion that our modern society has become disconnected from it. Humanity is still very much held and nurtured by nature. It is only our perception that thinks we are disconnected and stops us from honouring and celebrating that which we are a part of.
